Bṛhat Jātaka: The Mihira's Clue

Jyotisa has long recognized that despite similarities in planetary positions across birth charts, human destinies unfold along dramatically different paths. The ancient astrological treatise Brihat Jataka, composed by the renowned mathematician and astrologer Sri Varahamihira in the 6th century CE, addresses this profound mystery through specific configurations that elevate certain horoscopes above others. While countless individuals share birth dates and even similar planetary alignments, their life experiences range from extreme opulence to devastating poverty. This disparity, according to Varahamihira's comprehensive work, can be explained through four distinct auspicious birth combinations that fundamentally strengthen a native's chart and potential life outcomes. These special configurations involve precise alignments of planets in specific Bhavas and Rashis, creating powerful yogas that elevate the chart's overall strength. When present, these combinations can counterbalance otherwise challenging aspects in a horoscope, potentially transforming what might have been a difficult life path into one marked by success, recognition, and prosperity. The four auspicious birth combinations detailed in Brihat Jataka serve as markers of exceptional potential and divine favor. Each configuration carries its own significance and bestows particular qualities upon the native.

This article is presented as an interactive dialogue featuring Guru, a scholar from the esteemed tradition of Kerala, alongside his insightful students: Uma, Madhusudan, Shridhar, Medha, Keshav, and Aniruddha. Today the students have gathered around their Guru for understanding the methods of Panchang in Jātaka.

Uma: Guruji, which combinations in a horoscope indicate that the native is fortunate?

Guru: Madhusudan, read the Shloka from Brihat Jataka which begins with

Madhusudan: Yes, Gurudeva.

(Rf. VH)

śubhaṃ vargottame janma vesisthāne ca sadgrahe |
aśūnyeṣu ca kendreṣu kārakākhyagraheṣu ca ||

[Following birth conditions are considered to be auspicious — vargottama lagna, a shubha graha in veshi sthana, all kendras being occupied and presence of karaka grahas.]

Guru: Medha, let us read what is mentioned by Sri Rudra and Sri Bhattotpala -

Medha: Ji, Guruji. As you mentioned previously, Sri Bhattotpala and Sri Rudra have explained the meaning of the verses given in Brihat Jataka in a very simple way.

(Rf. Rudra)

[Birth is auspicious when the Lagna or the Grahas are Vargottama. When beneficial planets are in the second bhava (vesi sthana) from the Surya, birth is auspicious. Here, the term "Vesi" also implies both Vasi and Ubhayachari positions. When the quadrants (Kendras - 1st, 4th, 7th, and 10th houses) are occupied by grahas (not empty), birth is auspicious. When the karakas are present and the quadrants are not empty, the birth is even more auspicious.]

(Rf. Bhattotpala)

[One whose birth occurs in a Vargottama Navamsa, or when Chandra is in a Vargottama position, such a birth is auspicious. The Rashi that is second from the Rashi where Surya was positioned at the time of a person's birth is called 'Veshi.' If a benefic — Budha, Brihaspati, or Shukra — is positioned in this aforementioned Veshi position, then that birth is also auspicious. For one who has at least one of the four Kendras occupied by planets, that birth is also auspicious. Here, a Kendra occupied by benefic planets is especially auspicious. Therefore, it is said: 'If there is no benefic in even one Kendra at the time of birth or during travel or in one's work, the ancient seers declare that it is not auspicious.' One whose birth chart contains grahas that are designated as 'Karakas' that birth is also auspicious. In this context, the greater the qualities, the more auspicious the birth.]

Guru: Excellent, Medha. Now, Sri Varahamihira also states -

(Rf. LJ)

vargottamage candre caturādyairvīkṣite vilagne vā |
nṛpajanma bhavati rājyaṃ nṛpayoge balayutadaśāyām ||

[If Candra or the Lagna is Vargottama and aspected by four or more Grahas, the native so born will be a king. The Dasha of the Yogakaraka Graha will bestow position and status.]

Now, let us see all the four conditions one by one beginning with Vargottama Lagna. Candra is the seed of the horoscope and Lagna is the flower. If both, Chandra and Lagna are strengthened, the horoscope gains significant amount of strength. If weakened, the horoscope is also weak.

'Uttama' in the Dasha Varga scheme is described as a Graha falling in 3 benefic divisions. Uttama can be translated as 'the best/excellent.' Vargottama can occur in 0°00' to 3°20' of Chara Rashi, 13°20' to 16°40' of Sthira Rashi and 26°40' to 30°00' of Dwiswabhava Rashi.

If the Lagna is Vargottama, both Lagna and Lagna Navamsa is ruled by the same Graha. Thus, the native will have the qualities of that Graha. We have discussed this earlier. Brihat Jātakam gives following effects of Lagna Navamsa —

(Rf. VH)

pāpo hiṃstro'bhīśca vargottamāṃśeṣveṣāmīśā rāśivadvādaśāṃśaiḥ ||

(Rf. HM)

pāpaḥ krūro bhayavirahito meṣa pūrvāśake syādvargotkṛṣṭe nigaditavibhū rāśivadvādaśāṃśe||

[Mesha - a thief, Vrishabha - an enjoyer, Mithuna - a wise man, Karka - rich, Simha - a king or a land owner, Kanya - an eunuch, Thula - valiant, Vrischika - a load bearer, Makara - sinful, Kumbha - cruel, Meena - fearless. If Chandra be in Vargottamamsa, the native shall hold high position in his field.]

(Rf. SV)

vargottamā navāṃśāstathādimadhyāntagāścarādyeṣu |
sūtau kulamukhyakarā dvādaśa bhāgāḥ svarāśyādyāḥ ||

[The first Navamsh of a Chara Rashi, the 5th one in a Sthira Rashi and the 9th one in a Dwiswabhava Rashi are called Vargottamamsa. Should the Lagna be in such Vargottama Navamsh, the native becomes an important person in his lineage.]

Shridhar: Sri C. S. Patel in his book 'Navamsa In Astrology' notes that Lagna Vargottama is favourable for one's career and gives professional success.

Guru: That's right, Shridhar. Look at this horoscope. William Henry Gates III is an American businessman and philanthropist. A pioneer of the microcomputer revolution of the 1970s and 1980s, he co-founded the software company Microsoft in 1975 with his childhood friend Paul Allen. Following the company's 1986 initial public offering (IPO), Gates became then the youngest ever billionaire in 1987, at age 31. (Rf. Wikipedia)

Aniruddha: Guruji, what are the effects of Veshi Yoga?

Guru: The 2nd from the Bhava occupied by Surya is the Veshi Sthana. The natural benefics are favourable in this position. The results of Veshi Yoga are explained below —

(Rf. BPHS)

samadṛk satyavāṅmartyo dīrghakāyo'lasastathā |
sukhabhāgalpavitto'pi veśiyogasamudbhavaḥ ||

[The native born with Veshi Yoga has balanced views, is truthful, tall, lazy, has little wealth and is happy.]

Observe the horoscope of Swami Vivekananda. He was an Indian Hindu monk, philosopher, author, religious teacher, and the chief disciple of Sri Ramakrishna Paramhansa.

Keshav: Guruji, why should the Kendras be occupied by benefics?

Guru: Kendras which are responsible for stability and are known as pillars of the horoscope, are indeed very important part. Siva refers Kendras as Vishnu Sthana. If natural benefics occupy the Kendras, the native has good qualities. Conversely, if natural malefics are in the Kendras, his behaviour is like animals though born as human. If all the Kendras are occupied, Chatussagara Yoga is formed. The effects of Chatussagara Yoga are as follows —

The person will earn good reputation, be an equal to a ruler, have a long and prosperous life, be blessed with good children and health and his name will travel to the confines of the four oceans. (Rf. Three Hundred Important Combinations)

Madhusudan: Gurudeva, what are Karakas?

Guru: Sri Varāhamihira has explained Karakas as follows —

(Rf. VH)

svarkṣatuṃgamūlatrikoṇagāḥ kaṇṭakeṣu yāvanta āśritāḥ |
sarva eva ktenyonyakārakāḥ karmagastu teṣāṃ viśeṣataḥ ||

[Grahas that are placed in the Kendras in their Swarashi, Uccha Rashi and Moolatrikona Rashi are Karakas. The Graha placed in the 10th Bhāva is a special Karaka.]

Lets take an example. Pandit Ravi Shankar has Shukra in his Uccha Rashi in the 10th Bhava aspected by its dispositor Brihaspati. He attained great renown during Shukra's Dasha. Grahas in the 10th Bhāva are capable of giving game and success.

Guru-Candāla Yoga

Guru Chandala Yoga is one of the more controversial and widely discussed yogas in Jyotiṣa. For a long period of time it has been used as a tool for fear-mongering to generate good amount of income after creating hypothetical stories of past life and what not! To me this appears to be a marketing gimmick and nothing less than a corrupt practice which maligns the science of Jyotiṣa. In this article, certain aspects of this combination have been discussed with classical references and examples. Image Source: Pinterest Classical Dictums The Candrakalā Nāḍī declares — गुरुचण्डालयोगोऽपि पापकृत्यरतः प्रदः। [Even when the Guru–Caṇḍāla Yoga occurs, the native becomes inclined toward sinful or impure actions.] This dictum refers to the conjunction of Bṛhaspati with Rāhu, a combination known in Jyotiṣa as Guru-Caṇḍāla Yoga. The symbolism behind this union is deeply instructive. Bṛhaspati is the preceptor of the Devas, a Brāhmaṇa by nature, and the embodiment of sattva-guṇa. Whereas, Rāhu symboliz...

Phaladīpikā: Saraswati Yoga

The Saraswati Yoga is regarded as one of the most significant Yogas present in the horoscopes of poets, authors, writers, Nobel laureates, philosophers, and intellectuals. Its esoteric meaning extends far beyond the mere display of artistic talent or intellectual capability. Devi Saraswati, the goddess of knowledge and arts, symbolizes the transmission of divine wisdom from the cosmic consciousness into individual awareness. The presence of this yoga indicates that the soul has attained the privilege to convey higher knowledge through creative expression. The scribe has observed this Yoga functioning reliably, despite arguments suggesting its occurrence in numerous horoscopes. The essential points are elaborated in the subsequent article, accompanied by quotations from classical texts. 1. Bṛhat Jātaka: The First Shloka

Brihat Jātaka, composed by Acharya Varahamihira, is regarded as an exceptionally intricate text. It can be aptly likened to the phrase 'घागर में सागर,' symbolizing the vastness of the ocean contained within a single vessel. For centuries, this work has been imparted within the esteemed traditions of Kerala, accompanied by the commentaries of scholars such as Bhattotpala, Govinda Bhattattiri, Rudra, and Kannassa Panicker. Additionally, the text contains numerous concealed insights on Prashna, which have been examined in the Prashna Margam. The author of Prashna Margam holds Brihat Jataka and Dasadhyayi in high regard, stating the following : (Translations by Dr. B. V. Raman) [Brihat Jataka by Varahamihira, though short, is a very suggestive treatise pregnant with ideas. Though difficult to be comprehended by even intelligent persons, yet with the aid of the commentaries of...

Jyotiṣavimarśa: Divisional Charts - A Misnomer

The topics of Vargas and Nakshatras are among the most frequently misunderstood subjects in Jyotish, largely due to contemporary authors who neglect to engage with classical texts. In the present context, Vargas are often regarded as separate charts, wherein factors such as houses, aspects, Arudha, and Nakshatras are taken into account. While this approach may appear valid, it contradicts the foundational principles of the Arsha Jyotish system. There are mathematical justifications for this, a consideration that many astrologers overlook. A recent post of mine on X (formerly Twitter) provoked a response from several astrologers, who subsequently published articles containing factual inaccuracies, mistranslated verses, and other misleading information in an attempt to discredit my views. It is a well-known fact that the astrological community harbors numerous insecure and envious individuals who seek to undermine others simply because their opinions do not align with their personal rese...

Jyotiṣārṇava: The Jyotisha Of Professions

In today's world, there exists a vast array of opportunities for education, careers, and various professions. Unlike in ancient times, it is no longer a given that the son of a king will inherit the throne. As opportunities expand, many individuals are choosing to pursue their careers abroad. Accurately interpreting this information from a horoscope can be a complex endeavor. Nevertheless, by employing a few established and effective techniques, this task becomes significantly more manageable. In this article, I present a method that has been in use for over 4,000 years, which I refer to as 'Mihira's Master Method,' along with several other straightforward principles. It is important to note that numerous example horoscopes are included in this discussion. I trust that the process of predicting professions will no more cause distress for the students of Jyotisha.  I reviewed numerous articles and books which are written on professions. In one particular book, the method...

Vivāha Jyotisa: Kalatra Viveka

Kalatra Sthāna, or the 7th Bhāva, represents vivāha (marriage), which is one of the sixteen sanskāras within Sanātan Dharma. While the 7th bhāva encompasses various significations, our primary focus today is to explore the concept of marriage.  I have previously received feedback indicating that the Horā Muktāvali commentary on Brihat Jātaka became easy to comprehend through the Guru-Shishya Samvada. Therefore, this article is structured as a dialogue between a Guru and his students. It features an interactive discussion led by a scholar from the esteemed Kerala tradition, accompanied by his knowledgeable students: Uma, Madhusudan, Shridhar, Medha, Keshav, and Aniruddha. Following an enlightening conversation on Brihat Jātaka, the students have convened around their Guru to delve into the subject of Vivāha, or marriage.  I have endeavored to present this work in a format akin to that of the Nadi Granthas, wherein the student poses inquiries and the Guru provides responses. In ...
