Jyotiṣa Vicāra: Thoughts On Jyotiṣa

Kerala Jyotiṣa: Sukha Bhāva Combinations

Sukha Bhāva. Some Classical Combinations. Caturtha Bhāva — vāhana (conveyance), bandhu (brethren), mātā (mother), grha (house), kśetra (land). According to Śrī Punjarāja, the 4th denotes chest, place of living and cultivable lands. If Lagneśa and Sukheśa are together placed in the 4th, one begets a good house. Similar effects shall come to pass if the 4th Lord is exalted or occupies its own Rāśi or Navāṃśa. If the 4th & 10th Lord are together along with Śani in a Kendra, the native has a house of many storeys & built of good material. This is because the 10th denotes zenith. The 4th Bhāva is also known as Hibuka. If cruel planets influence the 4th, the native will possess evil intentions. Should gentle planets influence the 4th Bhāva, reverse shall prevail. 4th Bhāva rules vidyā (education). Śukra in the 4th makes one adept in music. One who has Budha in the 4th is well-versed in Jyotiṣa. According to Bhāvadīpikā, the native will be akin to Kubera if 9th and 10th Lo...

Kaṭhopaniṣad: Śreyas & Preyas

Kaṭhopaniṣad. Yama's Teachings. Yama & Naciketa. The characteristic that sets humans apart from animals is their capacity to think, reflect, and make moral decisions in pursuit of spiritual enlightenment through devotion to the Parabrahma. Humans can be classified into two distinct groups based on their beliefs - those who strive for Śreyas and those who pursue Preyas. However, it is important to understand the true meaning of Śreyas and Preyas. Yama clarifies to Naciketa that Śreyas is superior to Preyas. Both Śreyas and Preyas have their own unique purposes, but they can also blind those who pursue them. Seeking Śreyas is advantageous, while choosing Preyas leads to disappointment and failure.  Preyas frequently captivates the human mind. It encompasses a desirable and opulent way of life, a respectable standing in society, indulgence, convenience, well-being and countless other delights. These earthly gratifications embody Preyas - that which is pleasing. Preyas ...

While staying in Pandharpura, Samartha Ramdāsa Svāmī once asked Lord Vitthal, “O Śrī Rāma, why are you standing here all alone? Where are Mother Sitā, Lakṣmaṇa, and Hanumāna?” meaning that to Samartha, Viṭhṭhala Himself appeared as Śrī Rāma. At that very place, he composed a most beautiful Abhanga (devotional verse): ९ ॥ “Why are y ou standing here, O Śrī Rāma, Charming one, dark as a raincloud? Where are your bow and arrows? You’ve placed your hands on your hips! Why are you silent now? Your attire looks quite changed. What happened to the city of Ayodhyā? You seem to have made Pa...

Candrakalā Nāḍī: Excerpts From My Notes

Candrakala Nadi is an important treatise in Jyotisa. While studying the same, I collected few important principles out of which some are being shared here: Image Source: Pinterest. kugrāmavāsī svapitā nīcāṃśe bhāgyanāyake • bhāgyanāyake — when the Lord of the 9th, the significator of the father and fortune, • nīcāṃśe — occupies the Navāṃśa identical to its sign of debilitation, • svapitā — the native’s father, • kugrāmavāsī — dwells in a mean or lowly village. The Bhāgya Bhāva represents pitṛ-kāraka tattva (significations of the father), dharma, and bhāgya. according to which the consideration of father should be done by analysing the condition of 9th Bhāva and it's Lord. If this 9th Lord happens to fall in the nīcāṃśa, i.e., in the Navāṃśa corresponding to the sign of its debilitation, the strength of fortune and paternal dignity becomes impaired. The Rāśi chart may show c...
