In our digital era, wisdom frequently traverses unforeseen routes. What initially started as fragmented thoughts disseminated across social media platforms has transformed into something more significant—a compilation of insights that merits a lasting residence.
In recent months, I have been sharing reflections on Jyotisa—the ancient Vedic science of light—through various digital channels. Some insights appeared as brief thoughts on X, others as more profound reflections on my WhatsApp channel, and still others were incorporated into earlier blog entries. Each platform provided its unique rhythm and audience, yet the underlying theme remained unchanged: the timeless principles that underpin this sacred knowledge.
What you will discover in this collection is not merely a haphazard assortment of ideas, but ten meticulously chosen principles that constitute the foundation of genuine Jyotisa practice. These are not mere abstract concepts, but practical wisdom that connects the ancient with the contemporary, the mystical with the concrete.
Whether you are a newcomer to Jyotisa or have been following this path for many years, these principles act as both an introduction and a reminder. They embody the distilled essence of numerous hours of study, practice, and contemplation—now assembled here for deeper reflection and reference.
Each principle exists independently as a complete thought, yet collectively they create a tapestry that unveils the profound interconnectedness at the core of Jyotisa.
1. Panchang Elements: Tithi
(Rf. JB)
[Tritiya : Excessively lustful, excellent scholar, endowed with strength, obtains wealth from the king, lives in foreign lands, is clever, pleasure-loving and is subjected to pride.]
This chart belongs to a native born on Tritiya Tithī. The Tithī lord is Budha placed in the 5th. This native was associated with a government agency {राजकुलाप्तवित्तः।} and later started working as a teacher {विद्यो।}.
2. Panchang Elements: Vara
(Rf. JB)
[One born on Guruvara is intelligent, wealthy, bestowed with many good qualities, has a pleasant disposition, receives patronage of king and is dear to Acharyas (seers) & commoners.]
Dr. B. V. Raman was born on Guruvara while Guru is posited in 10th. His life was dedicated to the dissemination of knowledge and wisdom. Thanks to his writings, numerous students have the opportunity to learn Jyotisa in an accessible manner.
3. Lakshmi Yoga
This is from a very rare classic which is out of print.
(Rf. JY)
[If the Navamsa dispositor of 9th Lord is exalted in the 9th Bhava and in conjunction with 5th Lord, the Yoga so formed is called Lakshmi Yoga. Such a native is very wealthy.]
My dear friend Kesar Ji's acquaintance's horoscope features Mina Lagna occupied by Sukra, Brihaspati, and Budha. Brihaspati is in Thula Navamsa. My initial inquiry to him was whether the native's grandfather was indeed very rich and affluent. To this, he affirmed positively and mentioned that his grandfather owned five houses. It is important to note that Lagna is the 9th from the 5th Bhava of the paternal grandfather. (Horoscope is not being provided here.)
4. Lomasa Samhita: Using Vargas In Traditional Way
As discussed earlier, Varga are not independent charts. They are subdivisions of the zodiac and cannot be read as standalone charts. A classical method to use Hora (D2) and Navamsa (D9) is being explained here.
(Rf. LS)
[Brihaspati, Surya and Kuja produce effects in the Hora of Surya. Candra, Sukra an Sani do so when in the Hora of Candra. Budha is effective in both the Hora.]
In this chart, a very strong Dhana Yoga is present due to the combination of 2nd, 4th and 5th Lords in 11th under the aspect of 11th Lord. Dhanakaraka and 9th (as well as 12th) Lord Brihaspati is in 2nd. Lagna Hora is ruled by Surya who is placed in the 11th. 2nd and 11th lord are posited in Candra Hora confirming wealth. Sukra and Candra occupy Lagnāṃśa. Brihaspati being Vargottama and in Dhanāṃśa is an excellent wealth giving planet. Wealth obtained from forefathers will be expanded by the native with his own efforts. This chart belongs to a famous businessman.
5. Karaka Lagna
Suka Nadi provides an important rule to analyze Dhanakaraka Lagna - assessing the Bhava Lord or Karaka occupying 2nd from Brihaspati.
In this chart, Kuja who rules the 10th (2nd from 9th) is placed in 2nd from Brihaspati. This native received huge paternal wealth in the form of inheritance.
6. Speech Combinations
Rule 1: If 2nd lord is in Ucca Rasi, associated with Subha or Mitra Graha and placed in Kendra, Trikoṇa or Labha Bhava the native will be truthful and honest.
Rule 2: If 2nd lord is in Nica Rasi, associated with Papa Graha and placed in 6/8/12 Bhava, the native is dishonest.
Rule 3: If 2nd lord is placed in the Rasi governed by Sani or Kuja and malefics are in Kendra and Trikoṇa, the native will be untruthful.
Chart 1 has Sukra in his Ucca Rasi in 2nd while the 2nd Lord Brihaspati is in Budha's Rasi in a Trikoṇa. Budha is in Lagna along with Surya and Candra. This chart belongs to a saint.
Chart 2 has Kuja with Candra and 2nd lord from Candra Lagna is Brihaspati (Vāchaspati - the ruler of speech) in Sani's Rasi and Kuja's Navamsa in a Kendra. Both Kuja & Sani are aspecting Brihaspati. This chart belongs to a politician. His words cannot be trusted.
7. Combinations For Jyotisi
(Rf. SSC)
[If Budha is located in a Kendra, the 2nd Lord is strong & Sukra is located in the 2nd or 3rd Bhava with a benefic, or if Sukra is in Ucca Rasi in the 2nd Bhava, the native becomes foremost amongst the astrologers.]
(Rf. SSC)
[If Brihaspati is located in its own Navamsa and Mridu Amsa & is aspected by Sukra and Budha located in a benefic Navamsa the native is capable of knowing the past, present & future.]
Note that the Brahmin Graha (Brihaspati & Sukra) and Rasi (Karka, Vrishchika, Mina) must be strengthened. The 2nd, 5th, and 9th Bhava and their Lords should be favorably placed. Budha should be strong for better understanding of mathematics.
Dr. Raman had Brihaspati (2L), Budha & Sukra (5L & 9L) in Kendra. Brihaspati influences Lagna, Lagneśa and Candra. Budha and Sukra are conjunct & cast their 3/4th aspect on Brihaspati. He was among the most esteemed Jyotishis in history. Nevertheless, with the aspects being 3/4th, the outcomes are similarly 3/4th. With all due respect, several of his techniques regarding Navamsa are imperfect.
8. Combinations For Poetry
(Rf. SD)
[Sukra in 2nd Bhava : One becomes a learned scholar
proficient in poetry and dramatic arts, literary embellishments and rhetoric, literature
and commentaries, has complete mastery over kings and is an expert of Shringara
Shastra.]
In the horoscope of Rabindranath Tagore, Surya, Budha and Shukra occupy 2nd house. Dispositor Kuja is in 4th house. He was an Indian poet, writer, playwright, composer, philosopher, social reformer, and painter of the Bengal Renaissance. He reshaped Bengali literature and music as well as Indian art in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The Saraswati Yoga is also present in his horoscope.
9. Two Marriages
(Rf. SD)
[If Sukra and 7th Lord are placed in a
dual-natured Rasi or Navamsa, the native may have two wives.]
The following chart belongs to a man who married twice. Sukra is in a dual sign associated with Vargottama Budha, a dual natured Graha. 7th Lord Sani is also in a dual sign in the 6th Bhava.
10. Homosexuality
(Rf. VJ)
[A female born with Sukra in the Navamsa of Sani and Sani in the Navamsa of Sukra is highly libidinous. Such a female may have sexual relationship with other females. Similar results are expected if the Lagna is ruled by Sukra and the Lagna Navamsa falls in Kumbha.]
In this horoscope, Sukra and Sani are placed in the Rasi of a Kliba Graha Budha and mutually aspect each other (3/4th aspect). Sukra is in the Navamsa of Sani and Sani in the Navamsa of Sukra. The native is a homosexual female born in USA.
