Bhāvārtha Ratnākara: Vidyā Yoga

In the vast ocean of Jyotiṣa, few concepts are as profound and practically significant as Vidyā Yogas—the celestial combinations that illuminate the path of knowledge a soul is destined to traverse in this lifetime. The Sanskrit term "Vidyā" encompasses far more than mere academic learning; it represents the sacred pursuit of wisdom that transforms the seeker from within, bridging the gap between intellectual understanding and spiritual realization.

These astrological combinations, meticulously catalogued by ancient sages through centuries of observation and empirical study, reveal the divine blueprint of intellectual inclination embedded within each individual's birth chart. Just as rivers naturally flow toward the ocean, the human mind, guided by planetary influences, gravitates toward specific domains of knowledge that resonate with its purpose and innate constitution.

The beauty of Vidyā Yogas lies not only in their predictive accuracy but in their recognition of knowledge as a living, breathing entity that seeks appropriate vessels for its expression. Whether pointing toward the mathematical precision required for Jyotiṣa, the philosophical depths of Vedānta, the systematic methodology of Vedanga, the healing arts of medicine, or the creative expression found in poetry, these Yogas serve as celestial guideposts on the journey of learning.

Understanding these combinations offers profound insights into the soul's educational journey, revealing not merely what subjects one might study, but which forms of knowledge will serve as gateways to higher understanding and spiritual evolution.

The 2nd and 4th Bhavas are referred to as Vidyā Bhavas, representing the houses of education. The 5th Bhava pertains to Jñāna, or knowledge, while the 9th Bhava is important for higher levels of understanding. Some classical texts also regard the 11th Bhava as relevant to education. Budha serves as the Kāraka for Vidyā, whereas Guru is the Kāraka for Jñāna. It is a common misconception to associate the 5th Bhāva with education, which is not accurate.

Pandit Ravi Shankar achieved great renown in his profession during the MD of Shukra (exalted 5HL in the 10H, aspected by the dispositor Guru). Additionally, Shukra also governs the 12H (associated with foreign lands), which contributed to his global popularity.

Smt. Manik Varma has Shukra in 4th in exaltation. She was a classical singer belonging to the Kirana and Agra Gharana. She also sang Marathi Natya Sangeet, Bhavageet and Bhaktigeet.

[One with Surya and Budha together in Kendra (1,4,7,10) Kona (1,5,9) or Labha (11) is skilled in mathematics. Shukra in the 2nd makes one skilled in poetry.]

Illustration: Sri Rabindranath Tagore

In the horoscope of Rabindranath Tagore, Surya, Budha and Shukra occupy 2nd Bhava. Dispositor Kuja is in 4th Bhava. He was an Indian poet, writer, playwright, composer, philosopher, social reformer, and painter of the Bengal Renaissance. He reshaped Bengali literature and music as well as Indian art in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The Sarasvati Yoga is also present in his horoscope.

Illustration: Sri Aurobindo Ghose

Sri Aurobindo was born with Surya, Budha and Shukra in his 2nd Bhava. Surya is in his own sign. Sri Aurobindo was a prominent Indian Yogi, Maharishi, and nationalist. He served as the editor of the newspaper Bande Mataram. His deep appreciation for Indian tradition is evident in The Life Divine, where he includes numerous quotations from the Rig Veda, the Upanishads, and the Bhagavad Gita at the start of each chapter, illustrating the link between his philosophy and Vedic thought.

Acharya P.K. Atre was a prominent Marathi writer, poet, educationist, founder–editor of Maratha, and above all a noted orator. The horoscope has Shukra in the 2nd Bhava placed in its own sign.

[One with Rahu in the 5th is expert in decoding the profound meanings (of Shastras). Rahu in 4th makes one's mother long lived.]

Notes: A significant Sutra emphasized by the author indicates that Rahu contributes to the longevity of the living signification represented by the corresponding house wherever he is placed.

[Guru in 2nd Bhava gives proficiency in Veda and Vedanga. This shall occur undoubtedly if Guru is in exaltation or own sign.]

Illustration: H. H. Jagadguru Parama Pujya Sri Sri Sri Ganapathy Sachchidananda Swami

His Holiness Jagadguru Parama Pujya Sri Sri Sri Ganapathy Sachchidananda Swamiji, the Avadhoota Datta Peethadhipati, has Brihaspati, Budha, and Kuja positioned in the 2nd Bhava. During the period of his Brihaspati Dasha, he composed numerous songs extolling the deities. Sri Swamiji has authored over 2000 songs in Sanskrit, Kannada, Telugu, and Hindi, praising various deities.

[The native is educated and worshipped by the society if 2nd Lord and Guru are posited in Kendra or Kona. Such a native is proficient in all forms of Vidya and is honored by people.]

Illustration: Swami Vivekananda

In the horoscope of Swami Vivekananda, 2nd Lord Sani is in Kendra while Vachaspati Guru is in Labha Bhava. The 2nd Bhava is occupied by Budha and Sukra. Swami Vivekananda was an excellent orator.

[Kuja in 2nd Bhava makes one a logician while one with Candra in 2nd Bhava will be a Pundit or a Purohit who offers sacrifices or oblations.]

Notes: Sri. B. V. Raman in his commentary on Bhavartha Ratnakara states - "All people cannot be logicians in strict sense. So, it may be said that one who has Mars posited in or aspecting 2nd becomes clever in arguments." We have found this to be true in our practice. When Kuja is in the 2nd occupying Tikshna Nakshatras, the native has a sharp tongue and will be argumentative in nature.

Illustration: Pandit M.M. Vasudev Shastri

Pandit M.M. Vasudev Shastri Mahadev Abhyankar was a well-known grammarian and a learned scholar of numerous scriptures. He developed an expertise in grammar, literature, law, and astrology, as well as in interpreting scriptures like the Vedanta and Mimansa. In his horoscope, Chandra is in the 2nd Bhava aspected by 2nd Lord Brihaspati, Shukra and Shani.

[One with Sukra in 2nd Bhava is skilled in poetry and Shastras while if Sani is posited in the 2nd, the native is dumb and a rascal.]

Notes: Guru signifies knowledge and intelligence. Guru experiences debilitation in the sign of Śani, suggesting potential issues such as memory loss, forgetfulness, and sluggish cognitive processing. When Śani is located in the 2nd Bhāva, it may result in a lack of mental acuity. Additionally, since the 2nd Bhāva is associated with one's character, Śani's influence in this position may indicate an individual with questionable morals and a malevolent disposition. This is the application of Kāraka Principle.

Some other combinations from different classics are given below -

[If Kuja occupies the 2nd Bhava along with Chandra and is aspected by Budha, the native will be expert in mathematics.]

[The native will be expert in mathematics if Budha, as the 2nd lord, is in own sign or in exaltation, while Brihaspati is in Lagna and Shani in the 8th Bhava.]

[Brihaspati in Kendra or Trikona while Shukra is in exaltation will indicate that the native is well-versed in mathematics.]

[Brihaspati or Shukra as the 2nd Lord placed in the Moolatrikona or exaltation sign and aspected by Surya or Kuja indicate that the native will be a logician.]

[If Brihaspati and 2nd Lord are endowed with complete strength and aspected by Surya or Shukra, the native will be a grammarian.]

[The native will be an expert in Shastras if Brihaspati endowed with strength is in the 2nd Bhava, Kendra or Trikona aspected by benefics while it's Navamsa dispositor is also powerful.]

[Surya or Kuja as the 2nd Lord aspected by Brihaspati or Shukra will make one interested in logic. Similar effects will come to pass if Surya and Kuja are in Paravatamsa.]

Bṛhat Yogārṇava: Some Explanations On Graha Yogas

These are some excerpts from upcoming (unplanned) workshop on interpreting the Graha Yogas (planetary combinations). Image Source: Pinterest Combination 1: Mukhasya Vigandhatā (Foul Odour From Mouth) Jātakatattva 3.1.290. When Candra and Śukra occupy Meṣa and Budha occupies Lagna or 6th house, the person emits a foul odour from his mouth. A foul odour emanating from the mouth or body is traditionally associated with aggravation of Pitta Doṣa. In this combination, both Candra and Śukra are placed in Meṣa Rāśi, a sign ruled by Kuja, who is fiery and strongly connected with Pitta. When bodily heat increases abnormally, digestion becomes irregular, bile is aggravated, and unpleasant smell can emerge through the mouth, sweat, or skin. Thus, the sign itself provides the fiery foundation for the result. Candra governs rasa, bodily fluids, nourishment, and emotional softness. Śukra governs reproductive fluids, vitality, fragrance, and bodily charm. When these naturally gentle planets are place...

Jyotiṣārṇava: The Jyotisha Of Professions

In today's world, there exists a vast array of opportunities for education, careers, and various professions. Unlike in ancient times, it is no longer a given that the son of a king will inherit the throne. As opportunities expand, many individuals are choosing to pursue their careers abroad. Accurately interpreting this information from a horoscope can be a complex endeavor. Nevertheless, by employing a few established and effective techniques, this task becomes significantly more manageable. In this article, I present a method that has been in use for over 4,000 years, which I refer to as 'Mihira's Master Method,' along with several other straightforward principles. It is important to note that numerous example horoscopes are included in this discussion. I trust that the process of predicting professions will no more cause distress for the students of Jyotisha.  I reviewed numerous articles and books which are written on professions. In one particular book, the method...

Shukra In The 12th Bhava

In Jyotiṣa, the Graha Bhāva Phala is a significant subject that has been explored by the Rishis and Acharyas. It holds considerable importance in the realm of Bhava Analysis. There exist several classical texts, some of which remain unknown to the astrological community and are held by the scribe, that have thoroughly addressed the Graha Bhāva Phala. The scribe has endeavored to compile all findings related to Shukra's placement in the 12th Bhava, which is regarded as particularly unique and intriguing in its own right. General Dictum Image: Shukra.  Source: Pinterest. (Rf. Experiences In Jyotiṣa: Some Case Studies

Case 1: Kāma, Manas, Jyotiṣa & 7th House An astrological chart reveals many aspects of a person’s life and very little remains hidden from a skilled astrologer. One among these is the sexual tendencies of the native. This should not be treated as a taboo subject, as the classical texts discuss such matters quite openly. It is the moral responsibility of an astrologer to guide his clients if they are moving on the wrong path. Image Source: Pinterest In the given chart, the 7th Lord Śani is debilitated and retrograde, and it casts its aspect on the 7th house itself. The 7th house, which is also the debilitation sign of Bṛhaspati, receives the aspect of Bṛhaspati who owns the 6th and the 9th houses. Bṛhaspati is associated with Budha, the 3rd Lord, and Sūrya, the 2nd Lord. Thus, the 7th house is under malefic influence. 7th house from Candra is in Krura Kartari as the 6th house is aspected by Śani and 8th is occupied by Kuja. The 7th Lord from Candra happens to be Kuja who is under ...

Jyotiṣārṇava: Combinations Related To 10th House

This article has been originally written in Hindi. English version has been attached along with it after the completion of the article.

Government Jobs: Planetary Indications

One of the most common questions that the Indian community asks an astrologer is whether they will obtain a government job. For many people, it is seen as a symbol of stability, prestige, and social status. In many cases, astrologers make the mistake of predicting a government job merely because Sūrya is placed in the 10th house or happens to be exalted. Such a conclusion is often too simplistic. The 10th house certainly has relevance, but it is not the primary factor. Greater attention should be given to the 5th house, which reflects intelligence and the capacity to succeed in competitive examinations. Along with this, the 6th house should ideally be weaker in comparison to the Lagna. It is also important to examine whether the individual possesses sound morals and ethical conduct. Finally, the Daśā and the Gocara must provide adequate support at the right time for success in the examination and clearing the interviews.
