The classical texts of Jyotiṣa, while establishing comprehensive principles for astrological interpretation, occasionally present nuanced exceptions that challenge conventional understanding. One such remarkable exception is documented in the Deva Keralam (the book of exceptions), a text that held particular significance for the renowned astrologer Sri C. S. Patel, who regarded it as his primary reference work.
This exception not only enriches our comprehension of classical Jyotiṣa but also exemplifies how traditional texts contain subtle distinctions that can enhance the accuracy and depth of astrological analysis when properly understood and applied.

यो यो भावः स्वामिदृष्टो युतो वा ।
सौम्यैर्वा स्यात्तस्य तस्यास्ति वृद्धिः ॥ (Rf. VH)
[Results of the Bhāva get enhanced when it is occupied or aspected by its own Lord or a natural benefic.]
निसर्गपापस्य समग्रदृष्टौ नश्येत् फलं भावगतं हि नूनम् ।
कुम्भे रविः पञ्चमभावगः स्यात् करोति नाशमिह सोऽग्रजानाम् ॥ (Rf. DK)
[When a natural malefic is in 7th from its own sign, the results get destroyed. In case Surya is posited in Kumbha in 5th Bhava, then one's elder brothers get destroyed.]
This case is fulfilled for Thula Lagna when Surya is posited in the 7th from its own sign in an inimical sign - Kumbha. Though Surya aspects the 11th Bhāva - it's own sign, some particular significations get affected viz. the living significations.
Sri JN Bhasin who was well-versed with the principles of Deva Keralam has written in his book Hora Shatak -
पाप ग्रहाणां निज भाव दृष्टिः करोति नाशं तद्भावजीवनम् ।
कुम्भे रविः पंचमगो यथाहि करोति नाशमिहाग्रजानाम् ॥ (Rf. HS)
[If any natural malefic is posited in the 7th from his own Bhāva (thus aspects his own Bhāva), the life of person represented by that bhāva will be destroyed. For example if Surya be posited in 5th in the sign of Kumbha, he then by aspecting the 11th will destroy the elder brothers.]
The scribe notes that a Graha positioned in the 7th from its sign can be more harmful than when it is located in the 6th, 8th, or 12th from its sign. In the aforementioned example, the native is certain to acquire vehicles, achieve financial gains, and have his material aspirations met. Nevertheless, his elder siblings may face destruction or endure difficulties.
