Experiences In Jyotiṣa: Some Case Studies

Case 1: Kāma, Manas, Jyotiṣa & 7th House

An astrological chart reveals many aspects of a person’s life and very little remains hidden from a skilled astrologer. One among these is the sexual tendencies of the native. This should not be treated as a taboo subject, as the classical texts discuss such matters quite openly. It is the moral responsibility of an astrologer to guide his clients if they are moving on the wrong path.

In the given chart, the 7th Lord Śani is debilitated and retrograde, and it casts its aspect on the 7th house itself. The 7th house, which is also the debilitation sign of Bṛhaspati, receives the aspect of Bṛhaspati who owns the 6th and the 9th houses. Bṛhaspati is associated with Budha, the 3rd Lord, and Sūrya, the 2nd Lord. Thus, the 7th house is under malefic influence.

7th house from Candra is in Krura Kartari as the 6th house is aspected by Śani and 8th is occupied by Kuja. The 7th Lord from Candra happens to be Kuja who is under the combined influence of Śukra and Ketu.

Śukra, the natural significator of the 7th house, is placed in the 2nd house along with Ketu and remains under the aspect of Rāhu. Śukra also forms a trinal relationship with Śani, and both planets contribute their Navāṃśa to Siṃha Rāśi. The lord of this sign, Sūrya, is placed in the 3rd house, again strengthening the role of desire and personal urges.

Furthermore, the 12th house, which represents bed pleasures and private indulgence, receives the aspects of three natural malefics. Such influences clearly indicate sensual cravings and make it difficult for the native to maintain moderation.

This horoscope belongs to a male who developed an addiction to excessive masturbation and consequently faced mental disturbances.

Case 2: Health Factors

Quotations such as शरीरमाद्यं खलु धर्मसाधनम् and आरोग्यं धनसंपदा clearly highlight the importance of health in one’s life. Assessing health conditions and identifying possible ailments form an essential part of Jyotiṣa Śāstra. When combined with the advancements of modern medicine, the guidance of a Jyotiṣī can aid in prevention, pacification, and at times even the complete resolution of certain health concerns.

Jyotiṣa does not replace medicine but adds a layer of foresight and personalization. A skilled Jyotiṣī can indicate periods when one must be particularly cautious, suggest lifestyle adjustments aligned with planetary influences, and recommend simple remedial measures such as disciplined routines, dietary awareness, or acts of charity.

The condition of the Lagna, the strength of its lord, the influence of malefic and benefic planets, and the roles of specific houses such as the 6th, 8th, and 12th are all carefully examined to understand an individual’s constitution, vulnerabilities, and periods of susceptibility.

Observe the example attached. Śukra who is in exaltation, aspects the Lagna. Śukra is the 9th and 2nd Lord with its Mūlatrikoṇa falling in the 2nd. Śukra is the dispositor of Rogakāraka Śani who also rules the 6th house. Budha is the Lagneśa and also the lord of the sign occupied by Candra. Budha is in conjunction with Surya (12th Lord) in the 8th house. Both Lagneśa (and also Candra Lagneśa) and Kāraka are again aspected by Rogakāraka Śani and thus, suffer from affliction. The native suffers from health issues, mental worries, financial problems and his career is unstable.

Case 3: Homosexuality

Sexuality is an intrinsic aspect of human nature and ought not to be treated as a taboo. Classical texts, including Bṛhat Jātaka, Sārāvalī, Janmasamudra Jātaka, and others, have engaged with this subject in a direct and unreserved manner, offering certain combinations for assessing homosexuality within a horoscope.

However, the mere presence of such discussions in the classics should not be construed as an endorsement. Normative frameworks of conduct are to be understood in light of the Smṛti texts, which alone delineate the governing principles of behaviour.

मिथोंशस्थौ सितार्की चेदन्योन्येक्ष्यौ नृवद्रतम् ।
कुर्यात् सा स्त्रीभिरन्याभिः कुंभांशे वा सितांगगे ॥

[A female born with Śukra in the Navāṃśa of Śani and Śani in the Navāṃśa of Śukra may have sexual relationship with other females. Similar results are expected if the Lagna is ruled by Śukra and the Lagna Navāṃśa falls in Kumbha.]

Śrī Gopesh Kumar Ojha mentions in his commentary that such a native is highly libidinous. Śrī K. Guru Rajesh in his 'Applied Vedic Astrology' states: "The case studies of gays and lesbians investigated by me have brought forth the undeniable influence of Saturn on Venus."

It is observed that afflictions to the twelfth house and its lord are often associated with unconventional sexual inclinations. In this context, the 8th and 3rd houses also warrant careful consideration, as they can provide additional insight into such tendencies.

In this horoscope, Śukra and Śani are placed in the Rāśi of a Kliba Graha Budha and mutually aspect each other (3/4th aspect). Śukra is in the Navāṃśa of Śani and Śani is in the Navāṃśa of Śukra. The native is a homosexual female from USA.

In the next chart, Śukra is in the 10th house along with Kuja aspected by Śani and Bṛhaspati. Śukra aspects Śani with the 3/4th aspect. Śukra occupies Kanyā Navāṃśa governed by Budha who is associated with Rāhu. Rāśi Lord of Śukra is Kuja and Kuja's Navāṃśa Lord is Candra who are again receiving the aspect of Shani who is placed in the the Lagna. This horoscope belongs to a homosexual male born in USA.

Case 4: Education, Bṛhaspati & Budha, Pārāśarī Jyotiṣa Analysis

Education remains one of the most vital aspects of human life. An individual typically spends nearly two decades in the pursuit of learning, beginning as early as the age of three. In Jyotiṣa, primary education is assessed through the 2nd house, college education through the 4th house, and higher studies such as post-graduation through the 5th and 9th houses. Budha, being the Kāraka of Vidyā, must also be carefully evaluated in this context.

In the given chart, the 2nd house is influenced by the aspect of Ketu, who is conjoined with Budha and Śukra. The house is further constrained between malefic influences, as Kuja aspects the 3rd house while Śani aspects the Lagna. Despite these afflictions, there is some relief in the fact that the 2nd lord is placed in its own sign. This combination suggests that primary education was completed, but only after considerable struggle. The native bearly managed to pass the 10th standard with great difficulty.

When it comes to college education, the 4th house is heavily afflicted. It directly receives the aspects of Budha, Śukra, and Ketu, while also being occupied by Rāhu. Additionally, Kuja casts his aspect on the 4th house. For a Vṛścika Lagna, Budha functions as a highly malefic planet and is capable of creating instability and disruptions. These factors indicate serious obstacles in completing formal college education.

Some astrologer, focusing solely on Bṛhaspati placed in his own sign in the 5th house, had predicted that the native would attain high levels of education. However, such an assessment overlooks crucial subtleties. Bṛhaspati is situated in a Gandānta Nakṣatra, ruled by Budha, who is the lord of the 8th and 11th houses, and is also under the aspect of malefic Śani. The principle of “जीवः स्वस्थानहन्ता।” is clearly reflected here, as the very planet expected to bless higher learning instead contributes to its obstruction. As a result, the native was unable to pursue higher education.

Case 5: Travel Bloggers, Professions & Astrology

This horoscope belongs to a well-known YouTuber from Bihar who has travelled extensively across the globe at a young age. Since the exact birth details are unavailable, the analysis is based on Candra Lagna.

The Candra Lagna falls in a Cara Rāśi, and its lord is also placed in its own sign, strengthening the Lagna. From the Candra Lagna, both the 7th and 10th lords are placed in a Cara Rāśi of Vāyu Tattva, clearly indicating a profession that involves movement, travel, and constant dynamism.

Budha, being the 9th and 12th lord, is placed in the 2nd house along with Sūrya, the 11th lord. This combination strongly supports the theme of travel and indicates gains through such pursuits. Further, the association of the 9th and 11th lords with Ketu, along with the aspect of Rāhu, suggests connections with foreign lands, foreign cultures, and earnings linked to them.

Additionally, the 3rd lord, which is the 12th from the 4th, is placed in the 10th house. This placement signifies a profession that involves travel, communication, and active engagement with the outside world, reinforcing the overall indication of a career built around movement and outreach.

Case 6: Combinations For Being A Jyotiṣī

Śrī Varāhamihira, in his Bṛhat Saṃhitā, describes certain qualities of a Daivajña that every astrologer should seek to cultivate. These traits also indicate which houses in a horoscope are relevant when assessing the potential for becoming an astrologer. For instance, eloquence in speech is judged from the 2nd house. Freedom from vices is another essential quality. The six vices are signified by the 6th house, and since the 5th house is twelfth from it, a strong and favourable 5th house suggests the ability to remain free from such tendencies. He also emphasises that an astrologer should be devoted to deities, which highlights the role of the 9th house. Several such attributes are outlined. In the case of Dhanu and Mithuna Lagna, the 9th lord attains exaltation in the 5th house, indicating that individuals with these ascendants may naturally develop an inclination towards Jyotiṣa. Some classical combinations are enumerated here:

केन्द्रे बुधे वागधिपे बलाढ्ये शुक्रे धनभ्रातृगते ससौम्ये ।
स्वोच्चे धने दानवपूजित्ते वा ज्योतिर्विदां श्रेष्ठतमो नर: स्यात्‌ ॥

भृगौ सौम्यसमायुक्ते दृष्टे ताभ्यां शुभांशके ।
त्रिकालज्ञी भवेज्जीवे स्वांशे मृद्वंशसंयुते ॥

1) Daivajña Yoga: Budha in Kendras while Śukra occupies 2nd or 3rd house in its Ucca Rāśi and 2nd Lord is in dignity. (Śrī Sarvārtha Cintāmaṇi)

2) Trikālajña Yoga: Budha and Śukra in conjunction while Guru is in Śubha Varga and happens to be aspected by Budha and Śukra. (Śrī Sarvārtha Cintāmaṇi)

3) Matsya Yoga: 1st and 9th houses have Saumya planets, 5th house has one Saumya and one Krūra while 4th and 8th houses have Krūra planets. (Bṛhat Parāśara Horā Śāstra)

Note that the Brahmin planets (Brihaspati & Sukra) and Rasi (Karka, Vrishchika, Mina) must be strengthened. The 2nd, 5th, and 9th Bhava and their Lords should be favorably placed. Budha should be strong for better understanding of mathematics.

Presented here is the horoscope of a senior astrologer who has authored several books on Jyotiṣa that are widely read in Maharashtra. It may be observed that the 5th house is occupied by Bṛhaspati, described as dhīmān, placed in his mitra rāśi Vṛścika and in the nakṣatra of Jyeṣṭhā. Bṛhaspati’s presence in the Nakṣatra of Jyeṣṭhā adds a layer of seniority and authority. The 9th Lord in Jyeṣṭhā confirms popularity and gain of reputation. The 5th lord Maṅgala is positioned in the 2nd house of speech and is under the aspect of Śani, who is the lord of the 8th, along with Rāhu situated in the rāśi of Bṛhaspati. Maṅgala from 2nd (vāk) further casts his aspect on the 5th (buddhi), 8th (guhya-jñāna), and 9th (jñāna) houses.

Case 7: Judging Intelligence Through Horoscopes

The classical work written by Śrī Varāhamihira is replete with countless insights and concealed principles. Anyone who has thoroughly examined this text, particularly the initial two chapters, will undoubtedly excel in making predictions. This is due to the fact that the entirety of Jyotiṣa is encompassed within these two chapters. Here is an illustration.

According to Śrī Kalyāṇavarmā —

[Sūrya is the soul of the Kāla Purusha, Candra mind, Kuja strength, Budha speech, Bṛhaspati knowledge & happiness, Śukra passion and Śani sorrows.]

Using this single śloka, several principles can be derived. In the horoscope presented below, Bṛhaspati occupies Ucca Rāśi in the 10th Bhāva. Bṛhaspati is ‘tri-varga śuddha’ in the ṣaḍvarga scheme. Additionally, Bṛhaspati is strengthened in ṣaḍbala. Bṛhaspati is considered as the Kāraka of jñāna (knowledge) and dhī (intelligence). The 5th Lord Śani is in Pārāvatāmśa.

The 5th Lord Sani is in Dhanu Navāmśa whose Lord Brhaspati is in Simhāsanāṃśa. Bṛhaspati is in the Navāmśa of Sani who is placed in a Trikoṇa. According to Śrī Sarvārtha Cintāmaṇi, such a native is highly intelligent.

This individual is a chess grandmaster, undoubtedly showcasing exceptional intelligence.

Case 8: Nimitta (Omens) & Their Application

Nimitta, or omens, hold an important place in Jyotiṣa. A Daivajña is expected to remain aware of his surroundings and observe them with sensitivity. Over time, I have come across a few practical instances that illustrate this:

1. This occurred few years back. I had an important examination for which I was well prepared. Although I had studied thoroughly, there was a certain lack of confidence within me. The exam happened to fall on Śrī Gaṇeśa Jayanti, and near the examination centre a stotra dedicated to Śrī Gaṇeśa was being played. In that moment, I felt reassured that the exam would go smoothly. I passed with distinction.

2. On one occasion, I had to visit a government office for some paperwork. While getting ready, my mother suggested that I wear a particular shirt. Its colour corresponded to that of the 8th lord, Randhresa. As expected, the work did not get completed that day, and I had to visit thrice. The entire process turned out to be quite troublesome.

3. In another instance, while I was working on a horoscope, my father asked me to bring something to cover his mouth because of dust. That small incident led me to predict an issue related to the lungs, which eventually turned out to be correct.

Some may dismiss these as coincidences or insignificant events. However, to a practicing astrologer, such moments can carry meaning. They often serve as subtle cues that aid interpretation. In the end, it depends on the sensitivity and skill of the astrologer to recognise and apply them appropriately.

Case 9: Speech, Truthfulness & Liars

Rule 1: If the 2nd lord is in Ucca Rasi, associated with Subha or Mitra Graha and placed in Kendra, Trikoṇa or Labha Bhava the native will be truthful and honest.

Rule 2: If the 2nd lord is in Nica Rasi, associated with Papa Graha and placed in 6/8/12 Bhava, the native is dishonest.

Rule 3: If the 2nd lord is placed in the Rasi governed by Sani or Kuja and malefics are in Kendra and Trikoṇa, the native will be untruthful.

The chart attached above has Kuja with Nica Candra in the 2nd house. The 2nd lord from Candra Lagna is Brihaspati (Vāchaspati - the ruler of speech) in Sani's Rasi and Kuja's Navamsa in a Kendra. Both Kuja & Sani are aspecting Brihaspati. This chart belongs to a politician. His words cannot be trusted.

Case 10: Medical Profession

In today's world, there exists a vast array of opportunities for education, careers, and various professions. Unlike in ancient times, it is no longer a given that the son of a king will inherit the throne. Accurately interpreting this information from a horoscope can be a complex endeavor. Nevertheless, by employing a few established and effective methods, this task becomes significantly more manageable.

Presented here is the horoscope of a physician. Note that the 10th Bhāva is occupied by the 11th Lord Sūrya, who is the Kāraka of medicine, alongside the 2nd Lord Kuja, with Rāhu being aspected by Ketu. The 11th Bhāva receives an aspect from Candra, the 10th Lord and the dispositor of Sūrya, Kuja, and Rāhu. Consequently, the sources of wealth, namely the 2nd and 11th Bhāva, are also linked to Sūrya, suggesting a career in the medical field. Candra, as the 10th Lord, is positioned in the Kumbha Rāśi within the Shatabhisha Nakṣatra. Śani is the Navāṃśa Lord associated with Candra.

Given that Śani is favorably placed for Tulā Lagna, the individual has achieved significant recognition in his profession.

Bṛhat Yogārṇava: Some Explanations On Graha Yogas

These are some excerpts from upcoming (unplanned) workshop on interpreting the Graha Yogas (planetary combinations). Image Source: Pinterest Combination 1: Mukhasya Vigandhatā (Foul Odour From Mouth) Jātakatattva 3.1.290. When Candra and Śukra occupy Meṣa and Budha occupies Lagna or 6th house, the person emits a foul odour from his mouth. A foul odour emanating from the mouth or body is traditionally associated with aggravation of Pitta Doṣa. In this combination, both Candra and Śukra are placed in Meṣa Rāśi, a sign ruled by Kuja, who is fiery and strongly connected with Pitta. When bodily heat increases abnormally, digestion becomes irregular, bile is aggravated, and unpleasant smell can emerge through the mouth, sweat, or skin. Thus, the sign itself provides the fiery foundation for the result. Candra governs rasa, bodily fluids, nourishment, and emotional softness. Śukra governs reproductive fluids, vitality, fragrance, and bodily charm. When these naturally gentle planets are place...

Jyotiṣārṇava: The Jyotisha Of Professions

In today's world, there exists a vast array of opportunities for education, careers, and various professions. Unlike in ancient times, it is no longer a given that the son of a king will inherit the throne. As opportunities expand, many individuals are choosing to pursue their careers abroad. Accurately interpreting this information from a horoscope can be a complex endeavor. Nevertheless, by employing a few established and effective techniques, this task becomes significantly more manageable. In this article, I present a method that has been in use for over 4,000 years, which I refer to as 'Mihira's Master Method,' along with several other straightforward principles. It is important to note that numerous example horoscopes are included in this discussion. I trust that the process of predicting professions will no more cause distress for the students of Jyotisha.  I reviewed numerous articles and books which are written on professions. In one particular book, the method...

Shukra In The 12th Bhava

In Jyotiṣa, the Graha Bhāva Phala is a significant subject that has been explored by the Rishis and Acharyas. It holds considerable importance in the realm of Bhava Analysis. There exist several classical texts, some of which remain unknown to the astrological community and are held by the scribe, that have thoroughly addressed the Graha Bhāva Phala. The scribe has endeavored to compile all findings related to Shukra's placement in the 12th Bhava, which is regarded as particularly unique and intriguing in its own right. General Dictum Image: Shukra.  Source: Pinterest. (Rf. Jyotiṣārṇava: Combinations Related To 10th House

This article has been originally written in Hindi. English version has been attached along with it after the completion of the article. Government Jobs: Planetary Indications

One of the most common questions that the Indian community asks an astrologer is whether they will obtain a government job. For many people, it is seen as a symbol of stability, prestige, and social status. In many cases, astrologers make the mistake of predicting a government job merely because Sūrya is placed in the 10th house or happens to be exalted. Such a conclusion is often too simplistic. The 10th house certainly has relevance, but it is not the primary factor. Greater attention should be given to the 5th house, which reflects intelligence and the capacity to succeed in competitive examinations. Along with this, the 6th house should ideally be weaker in comparison to the Lagna. It is also important to examine whether the individual possesses sound morals and ethical conduct. Finally, the Daśā and the Gocara must provide adequate support at the right time for success in the examination and clearing the interviews.
